Shameful behaviour!

I am shocked at myself that I have left it so long between posts but suffice to say that I have been busy.

In June last year I found out I was pregnant and sadly had quite a tough pregnancy. I became preoccupied and sadly writing fell by the wayside!

However, I can share some extremely good news, we were shortlisted as finalists in the 2017 Wishing Shelf Book Awards, and then last month we were delighted to be named gold medal winners in the picture book category for our Christmas themed title: Zak and Jen’s Astronomical Adventures: Tinsel Town.  This now means that both our books are medal winners (one silver and one gold).

I can also share that the third book has also been drafted, and we hope to have it released as soon as possible.

In other news, I spent last year drafting my second Young Adult novel. This is now in the editing process and I am determined to get it finished by the end of the year.

I also have a few other things in the pipeline but more on that later!

Another post and more news!

Ok, admittedly I really need to get better at posting more regularly. But in truth, life is just so hectic at the moment it’s difficult to find the time! Anyway, as those of you who follow my Zak and Jen Facebook page or my Twitter will know, the last couple of months have been rather exciting!

First thing’s first, I am delighted to share the news that Zak and Jen’s Astronomical Adventures: The Petal Planet was given the Silver Award by the Wishing Shelf Awards and Chris and I are absolutely thrilled! The children’s books in this particular competition are judged by children and teachers which makes the award all the more special. It also means that we can put the award logo on our front cover, like this….

Cover with Silver Medal

As if that wasn’t exciting enough, some of you may have seen that we were honored to partner with the amazing Virgin Atlantic to celebrate International Children’s Book day. Chris and I spent the day at Gatwick airport signing copies of The Petal Planet for families jetting off to exotic locations with Virgin, including Orlando, Barbados and St Lucia! We hope all the children enjoyed the book and it was exciting to think that copies of our story were flying all over the world. Here are some pictures from our signing, including one of us alongside the awesome Virgin Atlantic staff who were so friendly and made us feel right at home – thank you Virgin Atlantic

So, all in all, pretty busy!

Finally, I wanted to give you all a little heads up to a small side project I have been working on.  A series of three children’s poems (currently being illustrated) that are designed to help children deal with some of their most common fears. Specifically,  Nightmares, Monsters and the dark. My hope is that these poems can help children feel more peaceful when it comes to bedtime and might just help parents in getting their little ones off to sleep! I will share a sneak preview when I have one, but in meantime, let me know if this sounds like a good idea!

Kicking 2017 off with a bang!

Ok, I admit that posting in March about kicking off my year with a bang is perhaps a little odd, but in my defence, January is always a ridiculously busy month for me, mainly because it seems that everyone I know is born in January.

Anyway, Christmas was a fabulous, fun filled time and things have been extremely busy behind the scenes for Zak and Jen (some of which will be revealed later this year).  However, I can share two pieces of exciting news. The first is that we are collaborating with the very talented Artist Sarah Woods to create some beautiful shoes designed using some of the artwork / themes from Zak and Jen. Sarah also made me some bespoke shoes  for me to wear to a New Year party and I can say that they were, without question, the most comfortable pair of heels I have ever worn – and they were a real talking point!

Below are pictures not only of my New Year party shoes and bag, a design we called Starlight but also the first pair of shoes in the Zak and Jen Hidden Magic Collection, which we have called ‘Petal’ – I think you will agree that both are absolutely stunning! Keep your eyes open for more information on this collaboration in the coming months.

The second piece of news, and one I am EXTREMELY excited about is the fact that Zak and Jen’s Astronomical Adventures: The Petal Planet, has been selected as finalist in The Wishing Shelf Book Awards. This is a great awards because it’s categories are judged by readers, and in our case, they are judged by a selection of children so we are honoured that they enjoyed our story.

Being selected as a finalist means we can now display this logo everywhere our book is featured which is really exciting. Winners will be announced at the beginning of April so please do keep your fingers crossed for us!

Finally, I hope everyone enjoyed World Book Day this week! I was humbled to hear that someone went to school dressed as Jen from Zak and Jen – that is so awesome! Let me know what / who your children dressed up as!

A long overdue post and a year in review..

I have been meaning to write a post (several, in fact) for quite some time. However, as per usual, time seems to have run away with me.

2016 has been a year of extreme highs and lows. We have lost some amazing individuals, including much loved celebrities and my own grandfather. The world has also seen some interesting political decisions. I guess only time will tell with regards to how beneficial the latter will be.

For me, I will try to focus on the good and remember that 2016 saw me launch not one, but two children’s books. The highs of this year include launching Zak and Jen’s Astronomical Adventures: The Petal Planet in May, and then seeing hit the Amazon Top 100 Children’s Books Best Seller list a few months later. Another high was receiving a letter from Kensington Palace, from the personal secretary of the Duchess of Cambridge.

In the summer of 2016 a snap decision by Chris and I saw us decide to launch a self published Christmas themed Zak and Jen adventure. This was followed by frantic editing, illustrating and promotional work that left both of us with our heads spinning, but I think it’s fair to say, we wouldn’t have changed it!

Since launching Tinsel Town with an amazing 12 day blog tour in November, we have received incredible feedback. The book was then invited to feature in the first ever Books on the Underground Independent Authors Day and we were thrilled. On the same day, Mummy Pages, a leading parenting website released their list of 8 Awesome Books to buy children this Christmas and we were delighted to be included!

In an effort to try and give a little something back, Chris and I made the decision to donate money from the sales of Tinsel Town to both Great Ormond Street Hospital and Manchester Children’s Hospital. Both of these have personal connections for us and we hope the money will go a little way to supporting the children being cared for, and their families.

It has been an amazing year and I am so incredibly thankful for every opportunity I / we have been given. As we head to towards Christmas and the start of a whole new chapter, I want to take the time to say Thank You to everyone who has bought a copy of either book. Your support means that I am here, able to do something that I love. I would also like to say a huge thank you to the bloggers that have supported us throughout this process, what these guys do is absolutely phenomenal and I am extremely humbled by all your comments and reviews. So, thank you Linda, Joanne, Helen, Rachel, Clair, Kaisha, Adele, Janet, Christina, Caryl and Amy – you all rock!

A huge thank you to my family and friends who put up with my constant book talk and have lived this journey with me. Far too many to mention, but you know who you are! A special thank you also to my ‘Partner in book crime’ and illustrator, Chris. Thank you for putting up with my constant editing, my ‘direction’ for images and just generally sticking with me. You are so talented and it is an honour to be working with you!

Last, but by no means least, I have to say an enormous thank you to my husband. Writing can be an extremely lonely road and I am so eternally grateful for your unwavering support, especially when I doubt myself. Without you, I am not sure these books would have ever made it to the shelves.

All that is left is for me to wish everyone a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR ! Be sure to make the most of every moment and treasure those around you as we look forward to 2017!

Lots of love,

A new Zak and Jen adventure!

As per usual, my time has been swallowed lately by work and general life activities. However, I have still managed to find time to pen a new Zak and Jen adventure. I won’t reveal too much yet, as there will be lots to come in the next few weeks. However, this new story will see best friends Zak and Jen disappearing off on another galactic adventure among the stars.

For those that cannot wait for further information, here is a teaser picture from the upcoming book. Chris and I hope you will love this one as much as the last one!

Much love!

Prints, Letters and the Palace

It feels like I am having less and less time to update my blog these days. In between having a full time job, being a wife and a mother as well as trying to find time to actually write – it’s all rather exhausting!

I did, however, want to update you all on some of the exciting things that have been happening lately. If you follow the Zak and Jen social media, chances are you have heard already but nevermind!

As I mentioned in my last post, we now have limited edition signed art prints of some of the images from the book. These prints are amazing quality and also come with a certificate of authenticity from the printer signed by Chris and myself. We have already seen quite a few sales of these so click on the link below and get shopping! Don’t forget you can have them personalised too!

And finally…. we were absolutely thrilled to receive a letter from Kensington Palace this week, thanking us for sending a copy of Zak and Jen’s Astronomical Adventures: The Petal Planet to them. We hope that Prince George and Princess Charlotte actually get to see it!

Officially published….

So one week or so on from our launch day and people have been asking me what I have been up to, and ‘what it’s like being a published author?’

I will start with the first question, to which the short answer is, LOTS of things! Like many authors I still have a day job and I’m a parent so as I am sure you can imagine, life is not exactly relaxing. Since launching the book, Chris and I have received lots of pictures from those who have bought it and it has brought us so much joy to see our book being read by children. Not only that, I have been busy sending out books to specific schools where we have connections and we know the staff are going to run Zak and Jen sessions. We can’t wait to see what the kids have been up to!

As you may know, one of the bloggers from our book tour, Linda Hill ran a competition to win some signed Zak and Jen bookmarks – this has now been drawn, so congratulations to Simeon Low, Lucy Farmer, Katherine Baxter, Debbie Cliff and Selina Dilley! You bookmarks will be winging their way to you shortly.

For those that follow our Zak and Jen Facebook page, you may have seen a short poll we ran to see what other Zak and Jen items our readers might be interested in. The results were overwhelmingly in favour of  limited edition prints and kids clothes so we are investigating both options further – hopefully we should have some exciting news on that front soon! You may have seen some teasers of Zak and Jen dresses – how cool are these?

For those that are teachers, we are putting something very special for you guys – so please put a comment below if you are interested in receiving some of our teaching materials!

So, to answer what it is like to be a published author, the answer is probably ‘surreal’. I still haven’t quite got my head around seeing my name on the front of such a beautiful book. A lot of people have been asking us if there will be more in the series, and those who read Kaisha’s blog post will know that we do have more in the pipeline – so keep your eyes peeled!

All in all, this journey is crazy, mad and cool in so many ways and it isnt over by a long shot!

Until next time… enjoy another picture of our amazing launch cake!
